Conservation Conversations: Rails and Redwoods
Rails and Redwoods / Thursday, February 25 / 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. via Zoom

See the recorded presentation on YouTube: https://youtu.be/TbIp-CLBlZA

The Mendocino Land Trust is excited to launch a series of Zoom “Conservation Conversations” in 2021. These are free talks for our supporters and community members. Attend via Zoom from the comfort of your home using your smartphone, computer or tablet.

Our very first CONSERVATION CONVERSATION will be presented by MLT’s own Lawrence Turner:

Rails and Redwoods: A brief history of local railroads and their influence on conservation in Mendocino County
Presented by Lawrence Turner, Senior Land Acquisition Project Manager

Thursday, February 25

7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. via Zoom

Come join Larry Turner, a sixth-generation Fort Bragg resident and avid train enthusiast, as he talks about conservation on lands that were once dominated by railroads and the logging industry. Larry will touch on the history of the Caspar Southfork and Eastern Railroad and its path along and impact on Hare Creek and Bunker Gulch. Larry will also explore the history of Crowley, a stop along the Skunk Line that was once a logging camp and is now surrounded by conserved land held by the Mendocino Land Trust.

Larry is an entertaining dinner party guest, so we encourage you to bring your dinner – participants will be on mute until a Q&A after the presentation. If you don’t turn on your video no one will see you chewing! Type your questions in the chat at any time, and we’ll save them up for Larry to answer after the featured presentation.

Want to attend but unsure how Zoom works? Email amy@mendocinolandtrust.org for light tech support.

March 17 | 12:00 am

Scroll down for wildflower guide from this hike!

Update: April 11, 2021 registration for this hike is FULL. Please watch for future opportunities to explore MLT conserved land.

Spring is in the air and oak woodlands are alive with birds and wildflowers! YOU are invited to join MLT for a guided five-mile round-trip hike at Ridgewood Ranch on April 17. Ridgewood is a gorgeous 5,000-acre ranch located off Highway 101 between Willits and Ukiah. This ranch is not normally open to the public, but MLT works with the landowner to conserve and protect 1,600+ acres of valuable oak woodland habitat. We have gained permission to share this beautiful protected area with you on guided hikes. Group size is limited and RSVP is required. All participants should wear a mask when close to others not in their household and practice social distancing at all times.

The hike will be moderately strenuous, covering about five miles round trip with about 700 feet of elevation gain to a hilltop with a beautiful view of the Ukiah Valley. If you would like to join us, please email amy@mendocinolandtrust.org. Please include your full name and names of anyone coming with you and indicate which town or area you will be coming from the day of the hike. As we will be walking through areas with grazing cattle, dogs are not allowed on this hike.

Earth Day Cleanup

April 18 | 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Earth Day Cleanup near Pudding Creek Trestle

What: Earth Day Cleanup

When: Sunday, April 18 1 pm – 4 pm

Where: North of the Pudding Creek trestle. Find our table near the “Silvergate parking area” for Mackerricher Park. https://goo.gl/maps/TZRVUXgGse4KeqE1A

Who: Mendocino Land Trust, MendoParks, Mendocino Woodlands Camp Association, Latino Outdoors and YOU!

Why: Because we only have one home / una casa and we want to keep it beautiful.

You’ve heard the saying “Earth Day is Every Day.” We at MLT strongly agree, and our efforts to conserve the natural places of Mendocino County are in effect 365 days a year. However, Earth Day (April 22) is a time to celebrate these achievements and an opportunity for people to participate in bettering the natural areas we all share. In partnership with MendoParks, Mendocino Woodlands Camp Association and Latino Outdoors, we are hosting a drop-in Earth Day Clean-Up at Pudding Creek to get you in the Earth Day spirit, four days early.

Stop by a table we’ll have set up just north of the Pudding Creek trestle (at the “Silvergate” parking area next to the Beachcomber Motel) and grab trash bags, gloves and hand sanitizer for your family group to do some DIY trash removal. Return to the table with your bag of trash for disposal and prizes (while supplies last). Esme Plascencia of Latino Outdoors will be available to chat with your group, answer questions and point out flowers and other natural wonders. We hope you can come say hello and lend a hand in keeping the trails, waterways and beaches we all share looking good and safe for wildlife.

Please respect social distancing and wear a mask when near people not in your household.

THIS HIKE IS FULL. Please watch our newsletter for more guided hikes this summer! Email info@mendocinolandtrust.org to subscribe.

Join us for a wildflower wander at Navarro Point on May 23! How many different types of flowers will we find in bloom? Come and find out! This walk will be led by “Ranger Amy,” current MLT employee and former naturalist. She’s itching to hit the trail and share her love of plants with YOU! You’ll learn to be on the lookout for “nature mysteries” in addition to wildflowers. Bring a sense of adventure, drinking water, lunch or some trail snacks and dress for the weather. The full adventure will probably last about two hours but you may come and go as you please. Bring a mask and be prepared to wear it when appropriate. Well-supervised children and leashed dogs are welcome — but be sure to stay away from steep bluffs! If you plan to attend, please drop an email to amy@mendocinolandtrust.org so we know how many people to expect.

This will be a slow wander of about one-mile with lots of stops to look at flowers and take in the beautiful views.

September 18 | 10:00 am

All over Mendocino County

This article is about Coastal Cleanup Day in 2021. Coastal Cleanup Day for 2022 will be on Saturday, September 17.

General Coastal Cleanup Day info from the California Coastal Commission can be found here: coastalcleanupday.org. Details about 2022 cleanup sites in Mendocino County will be posted in summer 2022. If you would like to host a site or have questions about how you can get involved please email info@mendocinolandtrust.org.

—-

Over the last 17 years, Mendocino County has had 5,000 volunteers to remove almost 60,000 pounds of trash and 9,000 pounds of recyclables! The Mendocino Land Trust is proud to coordinate sites for Mendocino County and grateful to our partnering organizations that have committed to hosting cleanup sites on September 18, 2021. Please mark the day on your calendar and come out and lend a hand to “protect your happy place.”

There are 15 Coastal Cleanup events happening in Mendocino County on September 18 — most are seeking volunteers like YOU! Keep reading for details about who/what/where/when. You know the WHY – keeping our creeks, rivers, beaches and ocean as clean and safe as possible!

Won’t be in Mendocino County on Sept. 18? There are cleanup events all over California! View an interactive map provided by the California Coastal Commission to find a site near you.

The Mendocino Land Trust would like to extend big thanks to MendoRecycle for providing a grant to help cover staff time spent coordinating this event and Waste Management‘s Fort Bragg office for facilitating dumpster donation!

Unless otherwise noted, no RSVP is needed – just show up the day of the event ready to help! Site captains will be able to provide supplies but if you have a bucket, trash grabber or gloves you can bring this helps cut down on the amount of waste generated by the event. Bring a refillable water bottle and a mask for times when social distancing may not be possible.

Busy on Saturday? One group has opted to do their cleanup on Monday… join them then if you would like.

Additionally, big THANKS to school groups planning their own cleanup events in celebration of Coastal Cleanup Day! (Participation in these events is limited to those invited by the organizing school group)

  • Fort Bragg Middle School plans to clean up Pudding Creek Beach
  • Teacher Erin Brazill and TLC students from FBUSD will be cleaning up the Westport Beaches
  • Pacific Community Charter School will take on Moat Creek Beach, the Stornetta Lands and more

Celebrate the New Year with a King Tides Walk at Big River

Join MLT Staff on on January 2nd to celebrate the New Year — and the peak of the King Tides — at Big River State Park. We’ll meet at 9:30 am; look for the maroon MLT truck. We plan to park at the end of the parking lot closest to the beach (towards the Highway 1 overcrossing). We’ll share coffee and donuts as we talk tides, share the story about the conservation of Big River, and discuss current Land Trust projects. Let’s (safely) mark the highest place water reaches at the peak of the King Tides (9:46 AM PST 7.23 ft).

Afterwards, all are invited to join our staff on a walk up the Big River Trail. We’ll hit the trail at 10 am. This is an “out and back” hike so you will be able to turn back whenever works for you — or keep going after everyone else calls it quits. Cancelled if heavy rain, we will gather if it is sprinkling. Dress for the weather!

Ridgewood Ranch

Ridgewood Ranch is located between Willits and Redwood Valley. It is a stunning area where one can appreciate Mendocino County’s rich agricultural history and wildlife habitat thriving side by side. In partnership with the landowners, MLT maintains two conservation easements on the ranch – one of which contains a surprising 33-acre grove of impressive old redwoods nestled in a wet spot amongst oak woodlands and ag lands. On September 10, MLT Staff will lead an evening outing to the redwood grove. We will talk about nocturnal wildlife (bats, owls, and more!) and watch the stars come out.

Please note this area is private property and use is only by special arrangement with the landowner.

Group size is limited to 20 people. Please register here. Want to learn more about Ridgewood Ranch? Click here.

Accessibility info: This outing will involve walking about one-mile round trip, mostly on dirt and gravel ranch roads and mowed grass. There are a few minor slopes to go up and down but elevation change is minimal. If you have further questions about accessibility please email info@mendocinolandtrust.org or call the MLT Office at (707) 962-0470 to discuss.

Coastal Cleanup Day at Hare Creek

Link To Event Page
September 17 | 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Hare Creek - Park at Mendocino College

Please join us to celebrate Coastal Cleanup Day at Hare Creek Trail and Beach! We appreciate all the community help that makes this MASSIVE cleanup possible. We will meet in the parking lot for the Community College Coast Center – you’ll find us by the big dumpster.

Please bring buckets, trash bags and any gloves you may have. We will provide nitrile gloves but many people like to put gardening or work gloves over them. Be prepared to get dirty!

In 2021, twenty volunteers worked with Land Trust staff to remove almost 1,400 pounds of trash and recyclables from this area. Due to its proximity to town and the continuing housing crisis, this creek way often ends up being a temporary home to transients and unhoused residents. Camps often become abandoned for a variety of reasons and belongings and trash are left behind. The debris not only affects the beauty of this area but also introduces litter and pollution into the nearby creek and ocean.

Removing as much of the debris as possible before winter rains create run-off is an important and well-timed effort. All who use this area – be they hikers, beach-goers, or those who seek refuge here — greatly appreciate your service in improving this area.

Please RSVP here.

Saturday, January 21, 2023

9:30-12:30

Join the Mendocino Land Trust Outdoor Social Club and the North Coast chapter of Latino Outdoors for a walk near Pudding Creek to observe the King Tides.

King Tides are extremely high tides that happen a couple of times every year; they offer us a chance to think about rising sea levels, the science of tides, and to marvel at the ocean’s awesome power.

Esme Plascencia, Program Coordinator for Latino Outdoors North Coast, will lead us to the Pudding Creek Trestle Bridge and give a short lesson on nature photography. After we stroll along the coast, trying out our new photography skills, we will gather for snacks and a debrief.

We will meet at 9:30 at the parking lot of the Noyo Headlands Park near Rossi’s at the intersection of W. Elm St. and Glass Beach Dr. Please bring your cameras–whichever camera you prefer–and lots of layers as it will undoubtedly be chilly.

MFF Festival Tent

MLT GOES TO THE MOVIES

Mendocino Land Trust is delighted to be a part of this year’s Mendocino Film Festival. MLT is sponsoring one of the films in the Films for our Future series: Wild Life.

Here’s what the festival program has to say: “From Oscar-winning filmmakers Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, “Wild Life” follows conservationist Kris Tompkins on an epic, decades-spanning love story as wild as the landscapes she dedicated her life to protecting. After falling in love in mid-life, Kris and the outdoorsman and entrepreneur Doug Tompkins left behind the world of the massively successful outdoor brands they’d helped pioneer like Patagonia, The North Face, and Esprit, and turned their attention to a visionary effort to create National Parks throughout Chile and Argentina. “Wild Life” chronicles the highs and lows of their journey to effect the largest private land donation in history.”

It will be showing twice at the festival: on Friday, June 2, at 10:00 in the festival tent in Mendocino and again on Sunday, June 4, at 10:20 at Coast Cinemas in Fort Bragg. On Friday, stay after the film for a Q&A with Executive Director, Conrad Kramer, and Conservation Manager, Emily Griffen, to discuss all that it takes to protect wild spaces here in Mendocino County. MLT will also have a table at both venues to answer questions and talk more about our conservation work.

Tickets are on sale now; purchase them at mendofilm.org to get a seat before tickets sell out!

Frank Hunter McKee Memorial Park, Potter Valley

9:30 AM – 11:30 AM

The big coastal cleanup day isn’t till September, but a popular Russian River spot near Potter Valley could use a little TLC. (Trash+litter collection!)

Join the MLT Outdoor Social Club, and guest star/old friend Amy Wolitzer, to enjoy a morning at this beautiful creek locale and leave it a lot nicer than we found it.

This is a great spot to look for creatures that depend on our waterways even as people recreate. From benthic macroinvertebrates to birds to amphibians, we are sure to find some interesting stuff! We will bring some nets and magnifiers so we can look closely at what we find.

Please wear sturdy footwear like hiking boots or running shoes during the cleanup. You are encouraged to bring sandals or water shoes and a towel and swimwear if you want to cool off in the creek afterwards.

Frank Hunter McKee Memorial Park, sometimes called McKee Parkway, is a 25-acre park that follows the east fork of the Russian river. It’s a 16-minute drive from Ukiah and a 30-minute drive from Willits. Meet at the first parking area on Potter Valley road just off highway 20.

MLT Salutes Cesar Chavez – “Father of Environmental Justice”

Link To Event Page
March 31 | 12:00 am

Cesar Chavez – Leader in Labor and Environmental Justice

Most people have heard his name associate it with seeking fair pay and better working conditions for farmworkers, but he did more than that, much more. His efforts for better working conditions went far beyond demanding fresh drinking water, proper sanitary facilities in the fields, and decent housing. Decent working conditions also called for steps towards environmental justice–banning of toxic pesticides on grapes.

According to an article by Marta Segura, one of the first chicana women to major in environmental studies, Chavez is the father of environmental justice. It was Chavez and the United Farm Workers, under his leadership, that demanded a ban on pesticides in the vineyards. Segura, who earned a masters in public health it UC Santa Barbara in the 1970s,  first learned as a high school student about the connection between these pesticides and birth defects such as spinal bifida. She was horrified to learn about these children, “who never had a chance to lead a healthy life.” Her awareness came, in part, from educational pamphlets produced and distrubuted by UFW organizers.

Chavez knew and spread the word that exposure to these widely used toxins led to cancer, birth defects, chronic lung and organ failure, and premature death. His work saw him reaching out to Mexican, Filipino and Muslim farm workers in California and beyond.

MLT salutes his efforts and those of the UFW, today, on Cesar Chavez Day. Their dedication made the environment safer for everyone who works in, lives near, or consumes straight-from-the-field agricultural products. Much work remains to be done, literally, in the fields of environmental protection and social justice. But we all owe a debt of gratitude to his passionate and dogged determination in the face of fierce and often brutal repression.

You can read the full text of Segura’s article here.

Here’s a list of, and info on, invasive plants at Hare Creek.

This is NOT an all-inclusive list!  Will add to this list as I can.

Data collected from Wiki, other online, book, and human sources (corrections, additions WELCOME)

“Invasive species” is an introduced plant that negatively alters its new environment, causing environmental damage.

“Noxious weed” is an agricultural classification given to plants that are injurious to natural habitats, ecosystems, or horticultural crops.
__________

ENGLISH IVY (Hedera helix) ATLANTIC or IRISH IVY (Hedera hibernica) aka English Ivy

Native to Europe, western Asia

Invasive species. Classified noxious in Oregon & Washington.

Impact – Aggressively competes with native vegetation, choking it out and completely taking over.

Climbs trees and can fully engulf and kill them

HIMALAYAN BLACKBERRY (Rubus armeniacus) aka ARMENIAN BLACKBERRY

Native to Armenia, Northern Iran (has no connection to the Himalayan region)

Invasive species. Noxious weed.

Impact –  Competes with native vegetation (big bully!), often crushing or smothering it. Dense thickets impede native wildlife movement and their access to water.

ICE PLANT (carpobrotus edulis), the type carpeting coastal Calif and the Channel Islands

Native to South Africa – Invasive species.

Impact -Aggressively competes with native vegetation, choking it out and completely taking over. Contributes to soil erosion. Alters the soil composition.

SCOTCH BROOM (Cytisus scoparius) Native to Western and Central Europe, North Africa. Invasive species. Noxious weed.

Impact – Competes with native vegetation, especially in disturbed ground (roadways, cut forests), where it overtakes seedlings, fire hazard.

TANSY RAGWORT (Jacobae vulgaris, Asteraceae family). Native to Northern Eurasia. Invasive species. Noxious weed.

Impact – Can be toxic to horses and cattle. The pollen collected by bees turns the honey bitter. Looks so innocent and pretty when you see a few, but before long, it is all you will see as it out-competes the native flora.

Notes – Pull root & all, bag it up, and put in the garbage, NOT the compost. The prolific seeds aren’t destroyed in compost, and can last for decades.

WILD RADISH (Raphanus raphanistrum)

Native to Western Asia, Europe, North Africa.

I do not find this plant to be “officially classified” as either Invasive or Noxious. Nonetheless, it IS a non-native invasive. It is also known to be a medicinal and edible herb, and anyone who wants to harvest it at Hare Creek (especially ALL of it) is most welcome to do so!

Impact – Beauty of its flowers aside, it competes with native vegetation

Here’s a rundown on some of the invasive species we’ll be attacking! (Information courtesy Lenny Noack),

___________________________________

List of, and info on, invasive plants at Hare Creek. NOT an all-inclusive list! Will add to this list as I can.
Data collected from Wiki, other online, book, and human sources (corrections, additions WELCOME).
“Invasive species” is an introduced plant that negatively alters its new environment, causing environmental damage.
“Noxious weed” is an agricultural classification given to plants that are injurious to natural habitats, ecosystems, or horticultural crops.
__________
ENGLISH IVY (Hedera helix)
ATLANTIC or IRISH IVY (Hedera hibernica) aka English Ivy
Native to Europe, western Asia
Invasive species. Classified noxious in Oregon & Washington..
Impact – Aggressively competes with native vegetation, choking it out and completely taking over Climbs trees and can fully engulf and kill them
HIMALAYAN BLACKBERRY (Rubus armeniacus) aka ARMENIAN BLACKBERRY
Native to Armenia, Northern Iran (has no connection to the Himalayan region)
Invasive species. Noxious weed.
Impact – Competes with native vegetation (big bully!), often crushing or smothering it Dense thickets impede native wildlife movement and their access to water
ICE PLANT (carpobrotus edulis), the type carpeting coastal Calif and the Channel Islands
Native to South Africa
Invasive species.
Impact – Aggressively competes with native vegetation, choking it out and completely taking over. Contributes to soil erosion. Alters the soil composition.
SCOTCH BROOM (Cytisus scoparius)
Native to Western and Central Europe, North Africa
Invasive species. Noxious weed.
Impact – Competes with native vegetation, especially in disturbed ground (roadways, cut forests), where it overtakes seedling. Fire hazard
TANSY RAGWORT (Jacobae vulgaris, Asteraceae family)
Native to Northern Eurasia
Invasive species. Noxious weed.
Impact – Can be toxic to horses and cattle. The pollen collected by bees turns the honey bitter. Looks so innocent and pretty when you see a few, but before long, it is all you will see as it out-competes the native flora.
Notes – Pull root & all, bag it up, and put in the garbage, NOT the compost. The prolific seeds aren’t destroyed in compost, and can last for decades.
WILD RADISH (Raphanus raphanistrum)
Native to Western Asia, Europe, North Africa
I do not find this plant to be “officially classified” as either Invasive or Noxious. Nonetheless, it IS a non-native invasive. It is also known to be a medicinal and edible herb, and anyone who wants to harvest it at Hare Creek (especially ALL of it) is most welcome to do so!
Impact – Beauty of its flowers aside, it competes with native vegetation

Mendocino High School Student Union

Mendocino Land Trust will be hosting the 2025 Environmental Potluck Luncheon, scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Mendocino High School Student Union, from 12 noon to 3 pm.

Please bring a dish to share if you can, and serving utensils for your dish. We will provide plates, utensils, beverages, etc.

The MHS Student Union is a beautiful new space, opening directly to views of the ocean, with a plenty of room for shared food service, presentations, and conversation. Please note, the school does not allow alcohol on campus.

Since the late 1990’s, Mendocino environmental and conservation groups including Mendocino Coast Audubon Society, California Native Plant Society, Dorothy King Young Chapter, MendoParks, Mendocino Land Trust, and most recently, the Noyo Center for Marine Science, have been meeting annually to enjoy a potluck feast, share news and information, provide mutual support, and present the Matt Coleman Environmental Service Award (renamed in Matt’s honor in 2011, after his tragic death) to a member of our community who has made a significant contributions to our community.

This year, MLT nominates Nicolet Houtz as the Matt Coleman Environmental Service award recipient. Nikki joined MLT in 2013 and is now our Director of Stewardship. Before joining MLT, she worked with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife through the Watershed Stewards Program in Fort Bragg, specializing in salmon population monitoring. She had previously worked in Sonoma with riparian restoration projects and native plant propagation. Her educational background in Environmental Planning and Geography was the foundation for her extraordinary contributions with the Land Trust. Nikki’s work is fueled by her love and respect for the landscapes and coastline of Mendocino County, and finding the balance between preservation of these assets and public access to them. Her deep knowledge of agency and community partnerships and funding opportunities was demonstrated in the vision, design, planning, and construction of the recently opened Ridgeline Trail extension of the Peter Douglas Trail at Shady Dell, a five-year, multi-agency project that opened up five miles of trail to hikers on the spectacular Lost Coast. She continues to lead and oversee restoration projects including salmon habitats in JDSF, endangered butterfly restoration projects on the coast. She is currently designing two public access trail projects in Point Arena.

We look forward to seeing you all!

Old Smith Ranch

Join MLT Land Protection Coordinator Matt Franks for an intro to the birds of the Ten Mile Estuary!

Matt will guide us on a leisurely walk on the Old Smith Ranch trail, helping participants to identify birds and learn about their habits along the way. We can expect to see some migrating songbirds this time of year who are either passing through on their way north or looking for nesting sites. Along the river we will look for year-round resident ducks, geese, and herons. Under the Ten Mile bridge, we should also see a flurry of swallows building nests, and hopefully we can catch sight of a Bald Eagle or an exciting rarity!

We will meet at the parking lot for the Old Smith Ranch Trailhead at 9am.

Bring water and a snack, comfortable shoes, and weather-appropriate clothing. You can also bring binoculars if you have them, and if not we have extra pairs to loan.

Hill House Inn, Mendocino

Mendocino Land Trust invites you to join us at the Mendocino Film Festival on Saturday, May 31st in the Festival Tent, for the film WILDING. Based on Isabella Tree’s best-selling book, WILDING tells the story of a young couple that bets on nature for the future of their failing, four-hundred-year-old estate. Battling entrenched tradition, they rip down fences and entrust the land’s recovery to a motley mix of animals both tame and wild. It is the beginning of a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding experiments in Europe. Not to be missed!

The screening on Saturday, May 31 will be followed by a discussion with Mendocino Land Trust Executive Director Conrad Kramer and others.

Willits Environmental Center

Are you interested in protecting your agricultural land? MLT, in collaboration with the School of Adaptive Agriculture and the Mendocino Producers Guild, is holding an educational, 2-hour lunch & learn workshop on Saturday, May 31st, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Willits Environmental Center to provide landowners with information about how to protect family lands, benefit from a conservation easement (CE), and help conserve more agricultural and working lands in Mendocino County. We will also hold another workshop in Ukiah in July. Please click here to RSVP if you are interested in attending. Registration is free of charge.

MLT has conserved thousands of acres of working lands in Mendocino County by working with landowners who donate or sell conservation easements (CEs) on their properties while continuing to own, work, and sell their land or pass it to their heirs. In 2023, MLT was awarded a grant from the Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation (SALC) Program. We are currently using these funds to purchase a CE on a cattle ranch near Willits, and we are working on other SALC-funded conservation projects in inland Mendocino County. Some of our other completed agricultural conservation projects include CEs on the late Paul Dolan’s Dark Horse Ranch in Ukiah and on the historic Ridgewood Ranch in Willits, home of the legendary racehorse Seabiscuit.

If you have interest in protecting your working land, or if you have concerns about doing so, consider attending this workshop! Or if you would like MLT to reach out to you, please contact Matt Franks, MLT’s Land Protection Coordinator, at matt@mendocinolandtrust.org.

Join the Redwood Coast Land Conservancy for a community event celebrating the Gualala River and connect with those who are working to protect it.

At 2:00PM, Eric Wilder, former chairman of the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians, will open the event with a Kashia Pomo song and talk about the cultural significance of the Gualala River.

This will be followed by a panel discussion with RCLC and scientists from Prunuske Chatham, Inc. (PCI) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) on early design concepts aimed at improving fish habitat in the Gualala River estuary.

Panelists include:

  • Matt Erickson – Fisheries Biologist and Grant Manager, CDFW. With over 30 years of experience in salmon management and habitat restoration, Matt plays a key role in the Fisheries Restoration Grant Program.
  • Carrie Lukacic – Principal Environmental Planner, PCI. Specializing in CEQA/NEPA compliance and environmental permitting, Carrie manages complex land management and restoration projects from concept to implementation.
  • Lauren Hammack – Geomorphologist, PCI. An expert in stream restoration design, Lauren brings 20 years of experience applying geomorphology, ecology, and hydrology to create effective, stakeholder-informed restoration solutions.
  • Moderated by Jim Elias, Executive Director, Redwood Coast Land Conservancy

A Q&A session with the panelists will follow the discussion. You can ask questions in person or submit them online here.

Throughout the afternoon , explore the river’s history, find out who won the Gualala River Community Photo Contest, enjoy light refreshments, and celebrate the importance of the river in our community.

Try Your Hand at Gyotaku Fish Printing: Discover the traditional Japanese art of Gyotaku, which originated in the early 1800s as a way for fishermen to document their catches. In this hands-on activity, you’ll use life-like rubber fish to create your very own fish print—while learning about the fascinating fish species found in our local waters.

Stop by educational booths to connect with state, federal, and local partners, including CDFW, Friends of the Gualala River, the Gualala River Stream Team, the Gualala River Watershed Council, Sonoma County Regional Parks, and more.

This work is part of a collaborative restoration effort funded by CDFW’s Fisheries Restoration Grant Program.
