MLT Celebrates Pi Day By Saluting Outdoor Educators!

Link To Event Page
March 14 | 3:14 pm - 3:14 pm

All over the world!

MLT recognizes Pi Day by saluting science educators, particularly outdoor educators such as MLT’s own Lorrie Lagasse! Lorrie has been teaching science in Mendocino county for many years and, as a board member, is an important part of the MLT team. Check out her work with PEEC, where she also is a board member and educator. Go Lorrie!

Lorrie Lagasse

SECRETARY

“It brings me great joy to be part of an organization that is conserving local lands for the betterment of all living things.  I hope to use my experience as a teacher and ranger to encourage others to become involved in the land trust.”

Lorrie Lagasse has been spending time in the woods since she was a child in New York state.  After receiving a degree in forestry from Virginia Tech she moved to California to work for the forest service.  She went back to school at Cal Poly to learn how to teach which landed her jobs in the elementary school and also environmental education camps. Summers were spent working for national parks like Sequoia and Lassen as a ranger.  Here on the Mendocino Coast she docents for the state parks, particularly MacKerricher State Park.

The California King Tides Project helps us visualize future sea levels by observing the highest tides of today. It’s a part of documenting current conditions and helping gauge the effects of global warming. You can help by taking and sharing photos of the shoreline during King Tides to create a record of changes to our coast and estuaries. Hike will be led by MLT Board Member and Environmental Educator, Lorrie Lagasse.

The Inn at Newport Ranch

The Inn at Newport Ranch

Looking for something to do after MLT’s Coastal Cleanup? Look no further. The Inn at Newport Ranch is kicking off a concert series on 9/23/23 with a portion of the proceeds to benefit MLT. Doors open at 5:30 pm and the performance begins at 7:30 pm. A light, ranch-style dinner will be served.

This is an opportunity a to have fun while supporting both MLT and a terrific local business that is known for promoting conservation and sustainability. It’s a real win/win/win! Director Conrad Kramer will be present to speak briefly about MLT’s current and upcoming projects.

The concert features Sean Hayes, a Bay Area singer-songwriter. Hayes was born in New York City, raised in North Carolina, and honed his earliest musical chops in a band playing Irish and old-time tunes — but his unique style of deeply felt, R&B-inflected folk matured during his two decades singing and playing in cafes, bars, and night clubs of San Francisco. You can learn more about him on his website.

Tickets are $100, and can be purchased at this link.

Seating is limited, and advanced-sale purchases are recommended.

Outdoor Social Club: Riverside Cleanup and Summertime Swim

Sunday, July 30, 2023

Frank Hunter McKee Memorial Park, Potter Valley

9:30 AM – 11:30 AM

The big coastal cleanup day isn’t till September, but a popular Russian River spot near Potter Valley could use a little TLC. (Trash+litter collection!)

Join the MLT Outdoor Social Club, and guest star/old friend Amy Wolitzer, to enjoy a morning at this beautiful creek locale and leave it a lot nicer than we found it.

This is a great spot to look for creatures that depend on our waterways even as people recreate. From benthic macroinvertebrates to birds to amphibians, we are sure to find some interesting stuff! We will bring some nets and magnifiers so we can look closely at what we find.

Please wear sturdy footwear like hiking boots or running shoes during the cleanup. You are encouraged to bring sandals or water shoes and a towel and swimwear if you want to cool off in the creek afterwards.

Frank Hunter McKee Memorial Park, sometimes called McKee Parkway, is a 25-acre park that follows the east fork of the Russian river. It’s a 16-minute drive from Ukiah and a 30-minute drive from Willits. Meet at the first parking area on Potter Valley road just off highway 20.

Mendocino Land Trust is delighted to be a part of this year’s Mendocino Film Festival. MLT is sponsoring one of the films in the Films for our Future series: Wild Life.

Here’s what the festival program has to say: “From Oscar-winning filmmakers Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, “Wild Life” follows conservationist Kris Tompkins on an epic, decades-spanning love story as wild as the landscapes she dedicated her life to protecting. After falling in love in mid-life, Kris and the outdoorsman and entrepreneur Doug Tompkins left behind the world of the massively successful outdoor brands they’d helped pioneer like Patagonia, The North Face, and Esprit, and turned their attention to a visionary effort to create National Parks throughout Chile and Argentina. “Wild Life” chronicles the highs and lows of their journey to effect the largest private land donation in history.”

It will be showing twice at the festival: on Friday, June 2, at 10:00 in the festival tent in Mendocino and again on Sunday, June 4, at 10:20 at Coast Cinemas in Fort Bragg. On Friday, stay after the film for a Q&A with Executive Director, Conrad Kramer, and Conservation Manager, Emily Griffen, to discuss all that it takes to protect wild spaces here in Mendocino County. MLT will also have a table at both venues to answer questions and talk more about our conservation work.

Tickets are on sale now; purchase them at mendofilm.org to get a seat before tickets sell out!

September 18 | 10:00 am

All over Mendocino County

All over Mendocino County

This article is about Coastal Cleanup Day in 2021. Coastal Cleanup Day for 2022 will be on Saturday, September 17.

General Coastal Cleanup Day info from the California Coastal Commission can be found here: coastalcleanupday.org. Details about 2022 cleanup sites in Mendocino County will be posted in summer 2022. If you would like to host a site or have questions about how you can get involved please email info@mendocinolandtrust.org.

—-

Over the last 17 years, Mendocino County has had 5,000 volunteers to remove almost 60,000 pounds of trash and 9,000 pounds of recyclables! The Mendocino Land Trust is proud to coordinate sites for Mendocino County and grateful to our partnering organizations that have committed to hosting cleanup sites on September 18, 2021. Please mark the day on your calendar and come out and lend a hand to “protect your happy place.”

There are 15 Coastal Cleanup events happening in Mendocino County on September 18 — most are seeking volunteers like YOU! Keep reading for details about who/what/where/when. You know the WHY – keeping our creeks, rivers, beaches and ocean as clean and safe as possible!

Won’t be in Mendocino County on Sept. 18? There are cleanup events all over California! View an interactive map provided by the California Coastal Commission to find a site near you.

The Mendocino Land Trust would like to extend big thanks to MendoRecycle for providing a grant to help cover staff time spent coordinating this event and Waste Management‘s Fort Bragg office for facilitating dumpster donation!

Unless otherwise noted, no RSVP is needed – just show up the day of the event ready to help! Site captains will be able to provide supplies but if you have a bucket, trash grabber or gloves you can bring this helps cut down on the amount of waste generated by the event. Bring a refillable water bottle and a mask for times when social distancing may not be possible.

Busy on Saturday? One group has opted to do their cleanup on Monday… join them then if you would like.

Additionally, big THANKS to school groups planning their own cleanup events in celebration of Coastal Cleanup Day! (Participation in these events is limited to those invited by the organizing school group)

  • Fort Bragg Middle School plans to clean up Pudding Creek Beach
  • Teacher Erin Brazill and TLC students from FBUSD will be cleaning up the Westport Beaches
  • Pacific Community Charter School will take on Moat Creek Beach, the Stornetta Lands and more

Spring is in the air and oak woodlands are alive with birds and wildflowers! YOU are invited to join MLT for a guided five-mile round-trip hike at Ridgewood Ranch on April 17. Ridgewood is a gorgeous 5,000-acre ranch located off Highway 101 between Willits and Ukiah. Conservation Conversations: Rails and Redwoods
Rails and Redwoods / Thursday, February 25 / 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. via Zoom

See the recorded presentation on YouTube: https://youtu.be/TbIp-CLBlZA

The Mendocino Land Trust is excited to launch a series of Zoom “Conservation Conversations” in 2021. These are free talks for our supporters and community members. Attend via Zoom from the comfort of your home using your smartphone, computer or tablet.

Our very first CONSERVATION CONVERSATION will be presented by MLT’s own Lawrence Turner:

Rails and Redwoods: A brief history of local railroads and their influence on conservation in Mendocino County
Presented by Lawrence Turner, Senior Land Acquisition Project Manager

Thursday, February 25

7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. via Zoom

Come join Larry Turner, a sixth-generation Fort Bragg resident and avid train enthusiast, as he talks about conservation on lands that were once dominated by railroads and the logging industry. Larry will touch on the history of the Caspar Southfork and Eastern Railroad and its path along and impact on Hare Creek and Bunker Gulch. Larry will also explore the history of Crowley, a stop along the Skunk Line that was once a logging camp and is now surrounded by conserved land held by the Mendocino Land Trust.

Larry is an entertaining dinner party guest, so we encourage you to bring your dinner – participants will be on mute until a Q&A after the presentation. If you don’t turn on your video no one will see you chewing! Type your questions in the chat at any time, and we’ll save them up for Larry to answer after the featured presentation.
