Property Description

The 23,780-acre Garcia River Forest is located in the coastal mountain range of southwestern Mendocino County, and encompasses approximately one-third of the entire 72,000-acre Garcia River watershed. The current forest conditions can be characterized as a young redwood and Douglas-fir forest, with a high component of tanoak and relatively simple stand structure. The Garcia River Forest is home to imperiled species such as Coho Salmon, steelhead trout, and the northern spotted owl, as well as black bear, mountain lions and numerous bird species. A search of the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) revealed a total of 19 animal species, 504 species of plants, of which 35 special status plant species are predicted to occur on the Forest. A link to the botanical report can be found below.

Free hunting permits are available for the Garcia River Forest. Hunting is allowed per CDF&W hunting regulations, with seasons for pig, deer and turkey available. Hunting access may be prohibited due to bad weather or poor road conditions.

At The Conservation Fund, we know that well-managed forests can be both economically viable and ecologically sustainable. On California’s North Coast, we continue to refine and demonstrate our pioneering approach to forest conservation, including environmental restoration, sustainable timber harvests, carbon sequestration and support of the local timber economy.
