Hike the Peter Douglas Trail
When: Sunday, June 11th
Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
What: The Peter Douglas trail is recently added feature to Save the Redwoods League property in the Usal area, thanks to Mendocino Land Trust. This moderately strenuous 2.3-mile trail offers a wide variety of coastal “experiences,” including expansive views of Mendocino’s remote and wild “Lost Coast,” deep redwood and Douglas fir forests. The northern end of the trail features a grove of old-growth trees (a.k.a Enchanted Forest) sculpted into bizarre shapes by salty winds. The rare minute pocket moss (Fissidens pauperculus) Rank 1B.2, is known to occur near the trail. There is a magic and mystery present here. We will be joined by MLT’s Nikki Houtz who will provide background of the property and creation of the trail as well as showing us points of interest.
The hike will be out and back, so plan on a 5-mile trip. Bring a lunch and plenty of water. Dogs will need to be well-behaved and leashed if joining us.
RSVP: In order to coordinate carpools, you must RSVP for this event. Your confirmation will include detailed instructions and directions for parking. Carpooling opportunities will be available from Fort Bragg and Westport. If the weather is too wet or cold for us to not have fun, the hike will be cancelled.
